Lesson 2: Solving Single Step Equations

Please go through the following steps to complete Lesson 2.

STEP 1. Watch this short video from Mr H.

STEP 2. Read the following:

In this lesson, you'll learn how to solve equations of forms x + b = c, ax = b, and x/a = b. (The x in each form is the unknown. All other letters represent simple numbers.) Here's an example of each form of equation:
  • x + 9 = 40 (9 more than a number is 40)
  • 3r = -18 (A number multiplied by 3 is -18)
  • t/5 = 20 (A number divided by 5 is 20)
Mathematicians call these single step equations because there is only one operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) in the equation and, therefore, just one step to solve them.

To succeed in this lesson, correctly solve 4 out of 6 equations on the lesson quiz. Lesson quizzes do not count for your grade. Rather they simply help you and me see how your learning is progressing. They tell us if you're ready to move onto the next lesson.

Reminder: Show your work! It's not enough to be able to solve such equations; we also want to clearly show how we find our solutions. As the marking rubric for the test makes clear, consistently showing work is required to achieve a high grade in this unit!

STEP 3. Watch one or more of the following instructional videos on solving single step equations. Experiment with different sources and instructors to find out which videos work for you.
  • MathTV (series of 1-2 minute videos) - follow this path by clicking on:
    • Algebra
      • Linear Equations in one Variable
        • Addition Property - choose from equation #1 and 5
        • Multiplication Property - #1, 2 and 3
STEP 4. Make a choice:
Practice solving single step equations at Interactive-Maths. This site creates random questions for you and shows you answers afterwards. Do two sets of questions for practice. Solve the equations on paper, and remember to show your work and check that your answer works!
  • Set 1: Choose One Step for type, and set yes/no parameters to Yes, No, No, Yes
  • Set 2: Choose One Step for type, as set yes/no parameters to Yes, No, Yes, Yes
OR...
Practice solving single step equations in your textbook. Choose about 20 questions of all types from p 301 #6-11. Remember to check your answers!

STEP 5. Reflect on your Lesson 1 learning and skills. Are you getting most practice exercises correct? Are any of the types of equations hard for you? Are you showing your work? And does your work follow the steps that you learned in the videos? Are you checking to see if your answers work in the original equation? Do you feel ready to try the lesson quiz? (Remember, you need to score 4 out of 6 or better to move on to the next lesson.) As needed, review more instructional videos to clarify the learning, try more practice questions, or ask me any questions.

STEP 6. Write the Quiz below. Answer the questions on paper, then compare your work to the answer key on the bottom of the quiz. If you get at least 4 correct and show the correct steps, you are ready for Lesson 3. If you get less than four correct and/or do not show correct steps to solve, please redo steps 3 to 5. Then retry the quiz.

STEP 7. Please show me with your quiz score and any questions you still have. Don't worry, your quiz result does not count towards your grade in this unit. And it's perfectly okay to do the quiz more than once. I simply want to know how your progressing so I can support you!
